Cabinet Maker

Who is a cabinet maker and what can they do?

A cabinet makeris a skilled worker who operates in the furniture industry and wood processing companies, crafting furniture (such as cabinets, shelves, tables, etc.) and other wood products (like doors, windows, and stairs) from wood and wood-based materials.

How can one become a cabinet maker?

Form of study: full-time school-based education.

Duration of study: 3 years.

Volume of company internship: 36 ECTS credits (approximately 936 astronomical hours).

Prerequisite for starting: basic education.

Upon completion of the curriculum, a level 4 professional exam for carpenters is taken.

What is learned?

Students learn about various wood materials, the design and manufacture of furniture and wood products, drafting blueprints, and furniture finishing. In addition to professional knowledge, general education subjects are studied, and a vocational secondary education is obtained upon graduation. Students in the wood sector have the opportunity for further training at the wood processing and furniture production competence center, TSENTER.

What comes next?

Cabinet makers have always been in demand in various wood processing companies. The more entrepreneurial may start their own businesses. Additionally, carpenters have excellent opportunities for further education— at the Võrumaa Education and Technology Center, one can study to become a level 5 wood products technologist. Higher education in the field of wood is offered by Tallinn University of Technology and the Estonian University of Life Sciences.
